The Centre for Media Research

We are a new kind of venue for Media Studies research in which questions of media history, media policy, media technologies, cross-cultural flows and new media developments are being explored in diverse ways within Irish, British and international contexts.

This CMR site is designed as a showcase for the work of the various research projects being carried out in the Centre. The Centre was set up in 2003 with a £3.1 million grant from SPUR (Support Programme for University Research), to support four main strands of research.

If you look below or click on the Research button in the navigation on the left of this page, you will find their titles: Visual (short for the History of Irish Visual Media); Digital (short for Digital Media and Pedagogy); Film (short for Cross-Cultural Film Studies); and Policy (Media Policy and Regulation). All of these projects intersect with other research being carried out in the Media Studies Research Institute but they have specific goals which must be carried out according to the funding specifications from SPUR. This is how they differ from other research going on in the Media Studies area.

If you have any further queries about research activities in general, please contact Professor Máire Messenger Davies or Sally Quinn.

If you are a PhD student seeking information about postgraduate research, please contact Professor Martin McLoone or take a look at the Research section of this site.

The Centre runs regular seminars and events in these areas and welcomes collaborative ventures with other scholars and media organisations.
